Email has become the preferred method of communication in many sectors. While it constitutes an easy and cost -efficient messaging solution, businesses secure text must take care to protect the data they transmit both in the body of the message and in any attachment it carries.

An email containing confidential data or financial data may be sent to a recipient who is inside the company or to a customer outside of the company. If the email is not encrypted it is able to be monitored and intercepted in many ways. The information contained in the email is at risk of being read, copied, or modified by unauthorised and potentially malicious users.

By monitoring the emails on a network it will allow potential threats to re-create emails from a company asking for sensitive information. This method is also known as phishing, which is jargon for fraudulent emails that to try to persuade individuals to give up important personal information such as an account name and password.
